Coach Brian Shrum

Brian is a native of the Pittsburgh area. Brian lives in Scottsdale with his wife, Lorrie Shrum and their daughter, Alexa. As parents, Brian and Lorrie have gained the experience of watching their own child go through the western Pennsylvania soccer system culminating in different levels of participation on U.S. National teams. As parents, they have seen the benefits and challenges faced by the western Pennsylvania soccer organization and can offer tremendous insights to our families as they begin their own journey through the same system.

As a coach, Brian has two clear objectives when developing players:

  • To utilize clear expectations, positive reinforcement and personal accountability to facilitate an environment where each player wants to achieve his/her maximum potential
  • To focus primarily on technical skill development from age 4 through age 14 to
promote confidence on the ball and a positive self-image when on the field

He understands that learning process needs to be fun in order to help children stay motivated but it also needs to insure that players learn the technical fundamentals of how to work with the ball. Strategy and tactics can easily be taught and learned in later years when the player’s mind has evolved to a point where these concepts are easy to understand. In the early years, players need to learn the basic skills of the game to help insure soccer becomes a life-sport that players continue to play throughout adulthood.

Brian holds the USSF A Coaching License and was just awarded the PAWest Coach of the Year.

We are fortunate and thankful to have such a “soccer-experienced” family and coach supporting us in our efforts to improve our program at the Sentinels. Some additional information about Brian’s experience is below.
